Inter- Club Friendship Race  27th September 2008

The Whitehaven Boating & Sailing Association welcomed visitors from neighbouring Workington and Maryport clubs to join an end of season friendship race. The bright sunny day with fresh Southwest winds saw a fantastic turn out; in all 17 yachts entered the race.

The course started south of the harbour heading south on a beat to the windward mark placed in Saltom bay. On turning the windward mark the course followed a 5 mile broad reach to the Workington South Cardinal buoy and a reciprocal course back to the windward mark. The final leg was a run downwind run back to the start / finish line.

The excellent sailing conditions provided close, exciting racing especially when rounding the marks. The sight of all 17 yachts line astern and in close quarter sailing off the Whitehaven coast was a sight to see.

The winner of the race was Billy Hurst and crew on Crackerjack representing the Whitehaven team. Taking first, second and third places, the Whitehaven club also took the team prize.

However as the race name suggests, this race is about inter club friendship and the fun was definitely in the taking part. Everyone seemed to enjoy the course and the pleasant early autumn sunshine. Thanks to all that took part and made the event a great success.

Earl Street Race 13th September 2008

Nine skippers presented themselves to the skippers brief on a morning that showed little promise in terms of the poor weather and zero wind. However all crews were keen to race and see how the day developed.

The course started from the usual start line off the Tom-Hurd marker with a beam reach to the Workington South cardinal buoy which was taken to port. The next leg was a close reach to a buoy placed about half a mile to the SW of the start-finish line. This buoy was also taken to port with a short broad reach back to the start-finish line. A second short loop around the buoy in Saltom bay back to the finish line completed the course.

To everyone’s surprise a good breeze developed giving good sailing which helped to take crews minds of the drizzle and poor visibility.

FCNK lead the race from the start taking both line honours and first place on corrected time.

Close quarters sailing around the final loop kept the fleet in close proximity.

One or two minor problems with the start and one incident involving a yacht getting tangled in one of the marker buoys did not mar the day and all taking part enjoyed the race.

Galemire Race 30th August 2008

A good turn out for the Galemire race saw nine yachts start on a grey but warm day with very light winds.

The yachts mustered North of the Tom Hurd maker start line and set off down wind towards St Bees Head. The light variable winds meant difficult progress. Shortly after the start
